Sunday Stats
Not much to report this week. I’ve had a cough and rather than aggravate it I decided to rest up and get rid of it. I felt myself getting better by the day and I think I’ll be ready to start running again tomorrow (Monday).
Tomorrow is also the first day of my Marathon training plan. Because of not running the last week, next week will be filled with slow runs only. No tempo, speedwork, etc, just slow runs.
First Post on WordPress
Nothing exciting. More than anything, this should test whether I’ve set everything up correctly after transferring the blog here from blogger.
As you were.
Another Bye Week
That tight chest I had. I’ve developed a healthy cough with it now. A lot better than it was even only a couple of days ago, but still.
Following the school of thought that “if you’re ill below the neck don’t run”, I’ve decided to take a week off from pounding the road. As much as I want to be out there I’ll leave it till next Tuesday.
I think I’ll have to reassess my Marathon training plan now too. I was going to be quite adventurous with the training schedule but I may have to tone it down slightly since I’ve not managed to clock up the miles before starting the 16 week training plan (on the 1st Feb).
Hmmm. More to come soon I guess.
Sunday Stats
It was a decent week of running this week. To a point anyway. I had to make a tough decision not to run on Sunday but it was probably for the best. That said, I managed to get in 3 x 4 mile runs.
So, this week I:
- Ran 11.84 miles
- at an average pace of 9.07
- with a total ascent of 1200ft
It should have been, at least, an 18 mile week. But, as I wrote in my last post I made the decision not to run because of my breathing. All seems to be on the mend now. I’ll still take it easy over the next week. Not sure how to approach it but, i’ll take it easy.
That’s all for now. Not lengthy post today.
Happy running!!
Tough Decision
I made a tough decision today. The decision not to run. I feel fine, no infection or cold or anything.
On Thursday after my morning run, My chest became tight. Over the course of a few hours, it got tighter and tighter. I developed a slight cough with it, but more than anything it was the tightness in my chest that bothered me. I hadn’t felt like that before. So, a swift visit to the doctors on Friday morning and a diagnosis later I was told there was no chest infection but I had a touch of asthma. Slightly odd I thought but there is a family history of it. The doctor told me I could still run and he offered to prescribe me a blue inhaler. Stupidly though, I turned it down. For the sake of a £4.00 prescription as well!
Anyway, my chest still felt tight on Saturday. I went for an easy run. I felt ok after it I guess. Sunday came though, and my chest felt tighter again. It was frustrating. I felt well, but breathing brought on coughing if i was doing too much of it. I then decided not to run.
I’ve been kicking myself all day. Every half hour re-examining my situation, trying to feel like I could nip out for an easy hour. All the while though, knowing I should stay in and not aggravate my breathing.
There is (almost) a happy ending. So annoyed with this tightness was I, I gave my Mother in Law a call earlier this evening. Half an hour later I had a blue inhaler in my hand. Couple of puffs and I felt better. Breathing without coughing.
I guess the doctor was right. And I should have taken that prescription.
Sunday Stats
Only two weeks till I officially start training for the Edinburgh Marathon. In the mean time though, I’m increasing my weekly mileage up to around 25 miles per week.
Before we go any further, last week:
- I ran 16 miles
- At an average pace of 9.15
- And had a total ascent of 1551 feet
Ok. So last week I increased my mileage by 4 miles. I know, I know, it’s way more than the recommended ceiling of 10%-15% increase per week. I kept things slow and steady though. Stretched properly after each workout, etc, etc.
I donned a new pair of running shoes last week too. Asics 2140. Desperately needed a new pair to be honest. The difference is amazing. But, i’ll post about them soon, when i next get a chance to write.
All said and done, it was a good week of training. The only day I felt a bit iffy was on Sunday. I went out a lot later than I normally would so it was more motivational than whether my body could take it.
This coming week, I’ll keep up the miles but the increase wont be so great. 3 x 4 mile runs then either a 6 mile or 8 mile long run to cap off the week.
Lots of Posts, Not Enough Time
Training for the Edinburgh Marathon Starts in two weeks. I have my plan, which I have thrown into my Google calendar. However, I’ve yet to write a post on it. I’d love to hear your views on the plan. I’m being pretty ambitious this year but I think I can do it, so tips on staying healthy and injury free would also be appreciated.
I hope to write a post about the training schedule this week. Can’t promise anything though.
Need to write the Sunday Stats post for last week too!
And I had also though about writing a post about my new running shoes. Less important than the Marathon training plan but should still be fun to write.
So there you have it. Potential future posts. I’m sure you’re glued to your seat waiting on them. :)
Mapometer
Reading through my blog list the other day I came across a great recommendation on the Techno Trotter blog for a mapping website called Mapometer. It’s really good. The routing is simple to use, with more functionality than Google maps and much better looking than the garish Map My Run.
They have UK & US sites, you can save & share routes and it also offers elevation profiles. Give it a shot yourself and hit the links below:
UK Site: http://gb.mapometer.com/en/
US Site: http://www.mapometer.com/en/
Thanks again to Techno Trotter for the links.
Sunday Stats
A new year and a new chart for the Sunday Stats! Doesn’t look like much now, but it’ll soon build up.
So, this week:
- I ran 11.91miles
- Had an average pace of 9.45
- With a total ascent of 1171ft
- Run at least 700 miles in 2010 (up from 650)
- Complete a sub 4 hour Marathon
- Run in at least 4 events in 2010
Wow!
I know this hasn’t got much to do with running, but the image just blew me away. This is an amazing satellite image taken by NASA on the 7th Jan showing a visual extent of one of the UK’s harshest winters in decades.
